Step-by-Step Guide to Measuring for Blinds
Materials Needed
• Tape measure
• Pen and paper
• Ladder (if necessary)
Step 1: Decide on the Blinds Position
Internal: Blinds that fit within the window recess.
External: Blinds that extend beyond the window recess.
Step 2: Measuring your Blinds
Internal Blinds
Width Measurement:
Measure the inside width of the recess at the top, middle, and bottom.
Using the narrowest width, remove 1.5cm off this measurement for the width for the blind.
Height Measurement:
Measure the height on the left, middle, and right sides of the recess.
Blinds will usually shrink over time so we would recommend using the longest length as the finished length of your blind.
Special Considerations:
If there are any obstructions like dado rails or tiles, measure the distance between these obstructions to ensure the blind will fit.
Note: Internal blinds can be top-fixed or face-fixed, depending on your preference and any protruding window fittings.
External Blinds
Width:
If the blind will sit onto the window sill we recommend that the width of the blind is the same as the window sill.
If the blind is to extend past the window sill, then extend the measurement by 5-7.5 cm (2-3 inches) on each side of the sill to reduce any light seeping through the edges.
Height:
Place the top of the blind 15-25 cm (6-10 inches) above the window recess to maximize light exposure when the blind is open.
If the blind is to sit onto the window sill then measure down to touch the sill, if the blind is to extend past the window sill then extend the bottom measurement 5 cm below the sill to accommodate for potential shrinkage of the blind over time.
Note: External blinds are typically face-fixed to the wall outside the window frame.
Step 3: Choose your Chain and Stacking Style
Chain Colour and Position:
Select a chain colour that complements your decor: Chrome, Brass, Antique Brass or White Plastic.
Decide on the chain position: Left Hand Side or Right Hand Side based on accessibility and preference.
Stacking Options:
Note: Your choice affects both the aesthetic and functionality of the blinds.
Fully Stacked: Ideal for maximising light; the fabric folds compactly.
Semi-Tailored: Features a slight cascade but allows more light in than fully tailored.
Fully Tailored: Displays a cascade of even folds, creating a classic, decorative look.
Recording Your Measurements
