How to Hang and Dress Pencil Pleat Curtains
A little extra care can make all the difference.
Step 1: Measure Your Pole or Track
Measure the working width of your pole (between the finials) or track (from end to end).
Half this measurement and add 10%. This is the width one half of your curtain will need to be once you have pulled up the tape.
Count the number of rings or gliders you have, this is the number of hooks needed for the curtains.
Step 2: Prepare Your Curtains
Open and remove your curtains from all packaging.
Lay one curtain flat on a clean surface.
Pull all three cords together until you reach the correct size calculated in Step 1.
You might need to pull the strings a little, work these pleats down the curtain and then pull a little more, and continue until the correct size is achieved.
Step 3: Secure the Tape
Tie a knot to secure the tape at the correct measurement.
Please note, when this sting is knotted it can be very hard to undo, ensure the size is correct before securing.
Tuck the excess cord into the open end of the tape. This side should be on the outer side of your pole or track.
Ensure there is no string loose that might cause a danger risk to pets and children.
Spread the tension evenly across the tape to create uniform pleats.
Step 4: Repeat for the Other Curtain
If you have a pair, repeat Step 3 with the other curtain.
Step 5: Insert the Hooks
Count the pockets on the back of your tape.
Divide this number by the number of rings or gliders calculated in Step 1 to determine the spacing between hooks.
Make sure to place a hook at each end of the curtain.
Step 6: Attach the Hooks
Insert the curtain hooks at the correct spacing, using the middle pockets on the tape.
Adjust to the higher or lower pockets if needed for a better fit.
Repeat this step for the other curtain if you have a pair.
Step 7: Hang the Curtains
Starting from one side, attach the hooks to your rings or gliders. It is advised that you or a helper takes the weight of the curtain whilst you attach the first section of hooks.
Ensure the open end of the heading tape is on the outer sides.
Repeat for the other curtain if you have a pair.
Step 8: Dress the Curtains
Draw the curtains back to their open position.
Starting from the outside edge, run your hand firmly down each pleat or fold to help them fall smoothly, you may need to pull certain sections forward and push other sections backwards.
Use ribbon, fabric scraps, or strips of plastic from the packaging to tie the curtains at the top, middle, and bottom.
Leave them tied for up to 48 hours to help form the pleats.
